Located at 217 East Main Street, Tuckerton, NJ, only a short walk from the Seaport Museum, The Lizzie Rose was originally built as the Customs House for the historic Tuckerton Seaport. It was here that the goods transported by ships from all over the world registered their cargo, and I’m sure, it was where seafaring Captains mingled and shared stories of their adventures.
Later, Captain Horner bought the building and converted it to his family home, which is rumored to have been a stop on the Underground Railroad. As hard times fell upon Tuckerton, the Horner home gradually fell into disrepair. A decade or so ago, the Captain’s home was purchased by a couple, the Reichard’s, and the Lizzie Rose was born. Their award winning restorations of 217 E. Main, as well as of the two Victorian’s flanking it at 213 and 219, were a labor of love in more ways than one. Dan’s skill and meticulous attention to historical detail and his wife, Liz’s, love of everything Victorian are evident throughout all three buildings. But it was in the centerpiece of their restoration project, the 217 building that now bears Liz’s name, that Dan poured out his love for his wife. You can see it in the used brick courtyard, many stamped with ROSE, and in the stained glass window he discovered while salvaging for antique moldings, that when turned upside down, spells out her name.
For several years, the Reichard’s operated a successful Tea Room, a Restaurant and Victorian shops. The event room was the original home of The Lizzie Rose Music Room, a non-profit that brought live music to the area and offered an intimate setting and incredible acoustics for guests’ listening pleasure. With Superstorm Sandy, and economic downturns, the building changed hands and suffered from neglect. The old painted lady, was down, but not out.
NEW OWNERS BREATHE NEW LIFE INTO THE LIZZIE ROSE
In 2019, Charlie Shaw and his fiancé Bobbi Bennett, partnered with Liz to restore the Lizzie Rose to her former beauty and imagine a brand new story for her that we hope will spur revitalization of the entire downtown area. Our goal is to create a new place that captures the spirit of the old girl’s long and storied history – a place where you will find respite from an often chaotic world, comfort in traditions of the past, and excitement in the unique and new. The Lizzie Rose is more than a place to have a delicious dinner or afternoon tea surrounded by beauty and elegance, where you can focus on conversation with those you love, while experiencing a menu that blends traditional American fare with international flavors. It’s also a place where you’ll find both vintage and local art and handcrafted and new items to purchase and enjoy, as well as entertainment and events that you won’t find anywhere else. It is our hope to create a place that becomes a must see for anyone visiting or passing through the area. The Lizzie Rose truly is more than a place, it is an experience!Although Covid has delayed some of our opening plans and expansion, we are are, in the tradition of the Victorians, persevering. Although, sadly, Covid restrictions have curtailed the activities of the Music Room, we hope to bring a music venue back as soon as restrictions allow. The Tea Room and shops are now open, and private rooms are available to rent for your events, or for a private, romantic meal in our tower room, where you and your love will have your own server, privacy and a special menu created to celebrate your unique event. Formal tea is offered every Saturday from 12 – 4 by reservation only. However, we are expanding our a la carte menu and walk ins are welcome. Stay tuned for announcements of expanded hours and menu items. I hope you’ll join us on our journey and help us design an experience that meets your unique needs.
